Growth vs Fixed Mindset

The way we think about ourselves shapes our decision making, our mindset and ultimately how our life pans out.

So, when it comes to growth it’s important to take some time to understand where your mindset is; are you ready to embrace all opportunities coming your way, or will you get in your own way?

You see, the way you think about your abilities be that talents or intellect, well that affects how likely you are to succeed in new personal development, trying new skills or adopting new habits.

Are you in a fixed or growth mindset?

Someone with a fixed mindset doesn’t believe they are good enough to achieve their goals. That could be a lack confidence in a whole host of areas; intelligence, skills, knowledge, or talents, and generally, with a fixed mindset, you don’t believe you can change/improve. You’re likely to believe if you’re not good at something, you’ll never be good at it. Or, a fixed mindset doesn’t have to be as extreme as that, it might just be that you’re someone who struggles to see outside the box, you might only be able to see one solution to a problem, rather than other ways you could approach it. You might not be able to see how things can ever change.

Someone with a growth mindset, may initially not have the intellect, skill, or talent to achieve their goals but they believe that they can learn and develop. You’re ready to take the leap into the unknown and learn as you go. You feel ok to make mistakes as it’s all learning.

It’s natural to toggle between the different mindset at different stages in life, in fact many of us do. As we face challenges and setbacks in life, mindset can really affect how you feel about you. Developing a growth mindset is something I support lots of business leaders and HR professionals to do, to achieve their goals.

It’s not just in a work environment that this mindset will benefit how we view challenges, how we embrace life, how we bounce back from failure, how we accept feedback and build relationships… all these things depend on our mindset and affect both our work and personal lives.

There are so many benefits to working on your mindset! Especially when it comes to personal development, our brains are open to developing and absorbing more information and lots of scientific research suggests we can actually live longer by keeping ourselves stimulated and challenged… even as we reach old age!

The first step is always working on acceptance of being open to change and believing that thought processes can change and circumstances can change. If you ever need any help with mindset, get in touch as that’s one of my specialities!
